Unraveling the Icelandic Cultural Web: "Hverra manna ert þú?
Ever struck up a conversation with someone new in Iceland and been met with a question that seems a little...intense? Don't worry, it's not because they're suspicious of strangers (probably)! It's all part of a fascinating Icelandic tradition known as "Hverra manna ert þú?" which translates literally to "Which humans do you belong to?"
Delving Deeper
This seemingly straightforward question actually opens the door to a whole genealogical excavation! It's a way of establishing connections, finding common ground, and uncovering the intricate web of family ties that bind Iceland's close-knit society.
The Third Degree (But Kind of Fun!)
Prepare to answer questions about your parents' occupations, your extended relatives (second cousins twice removed, anyone?), and maybe even your favorite casserole recipe (because Iceland). It might sound like a grilling session, but it's all done in good humor and a genuine desire to place you within the tapestry of Icelandic life.
The Beauty of Connection
This tradition isn't about prying into personal details you'd rather keep private. It's a way of sparking conversation, discovering shared history, and fostering a sense of belonging.
My Personal Experience
I remember when I was around 10 years old I met an old man fixing the front steps of his house on the next street from my Grandmothers house. He began by asking me "Hverra manna ert þú?" and when I answered in broken Icelandic that I belonged to a neighbor of his, my Grandmother and that I could speak English. He asked me a few questions about how it came to be that I spoke such good English, who my parents were and what our story was. He then proceeded to tell me about his Granddaughter who also speaks good English on account that like me, she had a foreign father. He introduced us and we struck up a friendship that remains close to this day. She became my late sisters best friend forever and the love between us has never been lost.
Embrace the Fun!
So, the next time you find yourself in Iceland and hear this question, don't be surprised! Embrace it as a chance to delve into the unique Icelandic culture and discover the fascinating web of connections that might link you to the person you just met.
